I think the 6Ws model grew out of the ancient Chinese 5Ws I-Ching advice on how to turn opportunities to your advantage by adding 'Why' to it.

Rudyard Kipling described 6Ws as his best teaches:

"I keep six honest serving-men
(They taught me all I knew);
Their names are What and Why and When
And How and Where and Who."

I both practice and preach the 6Ws model as an effective way to think holistically, to implement change systemically, and to design innovations harmoniously.
